Fire out, under investigation at Holly Shelter Game Land
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – A Sunday afternoon wild-fire had many eyes to the skies in Pender County. Forest service officials tell us it was out by 6:30 P.M.
The N.C. Forest Service is investigating a brush fire that they say torched roughly a dozen acres of the Holly Shelter Game Land. Officials do not know yet if other private lands were charred from the fire as well.
WWAY viewers from as far as Topsail Beach could see the smoke from the fire. Forest Service
officials say it all took place around Pinnacle Parkway around 3:00 in the afternoon.
They say at least seven trucks helped subdue the fire with aid coming from New Hanover County and local departments. The Forestry Service also used fire retardants and bucket dumps from helicopters as well as small engine air planes.
“On a different day with different weather, this could have been a very different event,” said Chris Meggs with the Forest Service.
Meggs tells us the fire endangered at least a dozen buildings, but no injuries came as a result of the fire. At this time, the Service says no homes were damaged either.
