Firefighters ‘Fill the Boot’ for MDA on Pleasure Island

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach and Kure Beach Fire Departments held their annual ‘Fill the Boot’ fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Volunteers were at the three different locations including the intersection of Dow Road and US 421 and the Kure Beach Pier to take donations that support MDA camps in southeastern North Carolina.

Money raised will also help search for treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and other related diseases.

“We feel like this is helping the kids across the country and that’s kind of what we do,” Carolina Beach Deputy Fire Chief Granger Soward said. “We, of course, enjoy working with the public but this gives us a chance to give back on a term that’s not fire related or something serious.”

More than 30 firefighters will be passing boots for donations until 4 p.m. Saturday, but you can stop by Carolina Beach Fire Station on Dow Road throughout the weekend to drop off any donations to help them reach their goal of $4,000.
