Firefighters bike from ‘Ground Zero’ to remember fallen heroes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters from New York are showing their support of the navy seal community. They’re riding their bikes from ground zero to Fort Pierce, Florida, with a brief stop here in the Port City. With them is a 14-foot steel beam from the world trade center 9/11 attack.

Rider Louis Strandberg worked on 9/11 and remembers it clearly. He says it is an honor to ride with fellow firefighters to memorialize those who died that day.

“It’s been a very emotional journey and it was such an outpouring if support on that day and this is a way to give back,” Standberg said. “I mean this piece of steel represents a lot to a lot of people. It’s just been an amazing journey.”

The riders take off for the next leg of their journey from the WFD headquarters Thursday at 9 a.m.
