Firing up the fun, Leland shoppers ready for Memorial Day weekend cookout

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — With the holiday weekend here, many are going to be spending some time out by the grill cooking for their friends and family.

At the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Leland Friday, we found some shoppers buying items for their Memorial Day weekend barbecue, including watermelon, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, and desserts.

Missy Smith and her husband are in town visiting their kids and she’s planning to enjoy the pool and have a family barbecue.

“We just came down for the holiday weekend and just plan on hanging out with the kids and grandkids and making lots of yummy food,” Smith shared.

The USDA reminds people to clean their grill using soap and water. Also avoid cross-contamination by using separate plates and utensils for raw and cooked food. Always use a thermometer to ensure your food reaches a safe internal temperature.
