First African-American to man 20-millimeter gun on Battleship North Carolina dies
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An important person in the history of the Battleship North Carolina has died.
He was 97 years old.
John Seagraves served on the ship during World War II, becoming the first African-American to man a 20-millimeter gun.
Seagraves was part of a crew which shot down a Japanese plane on April 14, 1945, off Okinawa.
