FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Man pulled from Oak Island waters dies

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Officials say the man pulled out of the waters in Oak Island Monday has died.

Rescue crews pulled a man from the ocean at around 11:30 a.m. in the area of 3900 block of West Beach Road. Fire officials say when they arrived on scene, they learned a man in his 20s had been under water for about 10 minutes. The man, Edward Webber, 25, was taken to Dosher Memorial Hospital and transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. A spokeswoman with the hospital said Webber died Tuesday. The cause of death is unknown, but there was an increased risk for rip currents in the area Monday.

Steve Bauer, a spokesman with the Xenos Christian Fellowship in Columbus, Ohio, said Webber was with a group vacationing in the area.

“We’re grieving with the family,” said Bauer. “We’re at a loss.”

The organization had a rally planned for today at the Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College. Mike Sapp, the executive director for the facility, said the event was canceled yesterday out of respect for the family.

This is not the first time a man from Ohio in the same fellowship has drowned. In 2013, Kwesi Sample, 21, disappeared off of Holden Beach. He was also in the area with the church group when he drowned.
