Five new inductees into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Five new inductees will be joining the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame this weekend.
Things kicked off Friday with a luncheon held at the Wilmington Convention Center.
The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame will welcome five 2025 inductees.
Scott Braswell was the Hoggard High School football coach from 1997 to 2014, winning 12 conference championships and the state championship in 2007.
“It’s just such an honor and I’m so flattered and humbled. There are a lot of people that are behind this, I’m standing on a lot of people’s shoulders and that makes it kind of special,” Braswell stated.
The first African American woman called up to the U.S. Women’s National Team, Kim Crabbe is also being inducted. After her soccer career, she started working with kids in the community.
“I just enjoy making a difference in people’s lives, as well as making our community better. I think it is very important that we each do our part, and I am just so lucky to be able to do it through soccer,” Crabbe said.
Tommy Craig, a New Hanover High School graduate spent 25 years in MLB, spending 15 years as the Toronto Blue Jays’ head athletic trainer before moving to another team to work in player development.
Dr. David Miller played baseball at Wilmington Junior College and after winning the championship in 1961 he was awarded the junior college all American honors. He later went on to coach baseball at UNCW.
“To be recognized for something you enjoyed doing and was your way of life and enabled me to go to college and have a career is just beyond belief really,” Miller shared.
And in basketball, Jerry Wainwright went 136-103 at UNCW in eight seasons and led the Seahawks to their first win in the NCAA tournament in 2002.
“And really…it’s not me it’s the recognition of all the kids and coaches that played or worked with me here. We had a special group. The town followed us, Trask Coliseum was so loud every home game,” Wainwright recalled.
The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame board of directors will hold the formal induction on Sunday.
