Former Town of Dublin Fire Chief killed in Bladen County crash

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Bladenboro man was killed in a traffic accident west of the town of Dublin Saturday morning.
The two-vehicle crash involved an SUV and a truck at the intersection of Highway 41 and Robin Lane (State Road 1232) around 11:23 a.m.
Jimmy Batton, 68, was stopped on Highway 41 waiting to turn left.
According to Trooper D. A. Schmale with the N.C. Highway Patrol, Kirkland Smith, 29, of Elizabethtown was driving a truck down Highway 41 and failed to stop colliding with the back of Batton’s SUV. He died at the scene.
Smith suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The highway patrol says the investigation is ongoing.
Batton previously served as the fire chief for Dublin.
