Former UNCW Coach Brad Brownell taking Clemson to the Elite Eight

The Tigers are one win away from the program's first Final Four

WILMIGNTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Clemson shocked the world again. After losing three of their last four games in the regular season, they will be one of the eight teams left standing in Division 1 men’s basketball.

The Tigers defeated the University of Arizona Thursday 77-72. Clemson last advanced this far in 1980, when there were 48 teams in the tournament.

Coach Brad Brownell was making his second appearance in the second weekend of March Madness in his 14 seasons with the Tigers.

“We’ve battled a lot of things. This is a great moment for Clemson basketball,” Brownell said.

Brownell completed his master’s degree in 1994. He became an assistant to Jerry Wainright, famously helping the Seahawks upset the 4th seeded USC Trojans in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2002.

Following that season, when Wainwright left for the Richmond job, Brownell was promoted to head coach. Brownell was named CAA Coach of the Year twice (2003 and 2006). In his four years, the Seahawks never finished below .500 and won a school-record 25 wins.
