Four Wilmington Sharks make Coastal Plain League All-Star team
Hear from the players about what the honor means to them
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Four Sharks have made the CPL All-Star team.
Second baseman Caleb Johnson is one of the best base stealers in the CPL. He has 20 so far this season. Infielder Trace Wilhoite has been making a living at the plate. He leads the sharks in both home runs and runs batted in. Pitcher Greyson Linderman has been shut down on of the bullpen this season, he has more strikeouts than innings pitched and has a save. Starting pitcher Travis Lavendier has 4 wins in his 6 starts.
The Coastal Plain League (CPL) announced the rosters for the 2024 All-Star Game to be held in Forest City, N.C., at McNair Field on July 7 and 8. This marks the 24th annual version of the league’s summer classic. The players were voted upon within their division by CPL head coaches, front office staff, broadcasters and local media representatives from each market. Since the game is being played in the Forest City Owls’ home ballpark, the West CPL All-Stars will be the home team while the East CPL All-Stars will serve as the visitors. The East All-Stars will be coached by Peninsula head coach Hank Morgan and Forest City’s DJ Russ (Wake Tech) will take the helm of the West All-Stars. Both skippers guided their clubs to the First Half Championships in the East and West Divisions respectively. Morgan will be assisted by Brian Rountree (Holly Springs) and Matt Mitchell (Peninsula), while Russ will be assisted by Craig McAndrews (Boone) and Connery O’Donnell (Forest City).
Earning the start on the mound for the East CPL All-Stars will be Wilson’s Reese Miller as he earned the most votes of any East Division pitcher and therefore will take the bump first. The 6-2, 220-pound righty from West Texas A&M is 3-1 with a 1.44 ERA thus far on the season. In four starts he has gone 25 innings, giving up just six runs – four earned – on 16 hits, while
walking only seven and striking out 25. Miller has held opposing batters to a .178 average while sporting a 0.92 WHIP and K/9 of 9.000. Toeing the rubber first for the West CPL All-Stars will also be Lexington County’s CJ Czerwinski. A 6-0, 205-pound right-hander hails from Gardner-Webb. So far in 2024, he is 1-0 with a 1.44 ERA and one save. In 25 innings of work, he’s allowed six runs – four earned – on 20 hits, walked eight and struck out 32. Opposing batters are swinging .213 against Czerwinski, who also has a WHIP of 1.12 and a K/9 of 11.520.
