Friends of Leland Library book sales cancelled indefinitely

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — One popular secondhand bookstore in Leland was closed for business Saturday. The house that the Friends of the Leland Library uses for their book sale is no longer usable after Hurricane Florence.

The Magnolia House, near Leland Town Hall, now has mold and other damage from the hurricane. The book sale is supposed to be the second Saturday of every month.

Members of the group say they usually have almost 30,000 books, but they will probably lose half of them from the damage. One member says they could be out of business for months.

“The hit to our library is going to be great. We’ve raised an average of $15,000 a year to contribute to our library. So if this doesn’t happen for a few months, it’s going to be felt in the library for sure,” said Arlene White, a member of the group.

White says this is the only book store in Leland. She says the money they raise from the sale goes straight to the Leland Library.
