From left field to lead singer: How one UNCW Baseball player is preparing for a life in country music

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Before Jayson Arendt starts his country music tour, his Seahawks have a CAA title to defend – and possibly push further.

Jayson Arendt has been playing his ball his whole life. The guitar – now that’s a different story.

“Couple years,” Arendt says of the time he has been singing and playing the guitar.

But you’d never know that from hearing him play — and hearing the crowds cheer — as he plays in front of thousands of fans at venues across the Carolinas.

“I see it as my comfort zone,” says Arendt. “I love entertaining people I find it fun. I’m going to have the best time of my life and as long as I can have the best time of my life everyone else will to.”

You might think – how does he have time for both baseball and music? Well technically he doesn’t Jayson and Head Coach Randy Hood have an agreement no shows during the spring season. But coach has not only accepted Jayson’s blooming career – he supports it.

“He’s very talented,” said Coach Hood. “Very passionate. I think it’s important when guys have a dream like that for people in my position to do what we can to help them reach their potential.”

“Baseball and music have the exact same parallel that is hard work,” says Arendt. “You have to be able to sit down and put in the time and not get frustrated, not work yourself up, and keep pushing every day… That’s something that happens in baseball – ups and downs — some songs are good some songs suck — but you need to be able to wake up with a clear mind and do it again.”

Just like every great song, Jayson’s baseball career will come to an end soon. Arendt says this season will be his last.

But he’s stoked for his last ride – to try and win the CAA Championship trophy again, maybe not as the lead singer of the seahawks, but ready to play his roll.

“We’ve got some of the most talented players in the conference by far we can compete with anyone it’s going to come down to how good of team we area and how close we are as a team.”
