Fun facts about the St. Patrick’s Day holiday

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Do you know the history of the holiday?

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, died on March 17, 461. Parades in the U.S., such as the original in New York, didn’t come around until much, much later.

The Big Apple first held their parade in 1762.

Another tradition, Chicago dyeing its river green, began in 1961.

And don’t forget the corned beef! The USDA says nearly 24 billion pounds of beef was produced in 2015.

Also, 10 percent of Americans claim Irish ancestry.
