Gamecock fan leading flyover for football title game

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) — As Clemson battles for the national football title in Arizona, it’s a Citadel graduate and a Gamecock fan who will lead the squadron of fighter jets flying over the stadium before the game.

The Citadel says Maj. Matthew “Diesel” Mayer will lead the squadron flying over the University of Phoenix Stadium before Clemson takes on Alabama on Monday night. He’s a 2004 graduate of the military college.

Mayer has served in the Air Force for 12 years and is stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix.

He grew up in Lexington and always has been a fan of the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina. But he says he’s rooting for Clemson on Monday.
