Getting involved: A first-time voter’s perspective

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With important elections just around the corner, many young people are preparing to vote for the first time.

Among them is 19-year-old Luke Basso, a college student who is eager to make his voice heard.

“I’m really excited that this is my first time voting,” Luke shares.

Luke’s passion for history plays a significant role in his interest in politics. In his free time, he interviews veterans and collects memorabilia from different eras and wars.

Basso understands that elections matter not just on the national stage but locally as well.

“You know, also the governor, district attorney, school board, which affect you, especially living in this area.”

For those who may feel unsure about their choices, Luke offers some advice:

“Just do the research on who you want to vote for—there are people on both sides that have bad and good elements. I’m voting for people on both sides, I’ll admit that.”

He believes that connecting with candidates personally is key to making informed decisions.

“I’ll go in person, try and meet these candidates. If they’re hosting events or they’re hosting rallies or a meet and greet, I’m going to go to and try and meet them.”

As he encourages his peers to join him at the polls, Luke emphasizes the importance of participation.

“In this country, we have the opportunity to vote, and many places across the world do not. So I am encouraging many people to take this opportunity, go register, do the research, and find the candidates you want to vote for.”

Looking ahead, Luke is excited about Veterans Day.

He plans to interview more veterans for his YouTube channel, blending his passion for history with his commitment to honoring those who served.
