From groceries to sandbags: How locals are preparing for weather

LELAND, NC– At the Harris Teeter in Waterford Village, Leland, there was a mix of both routine shopping and last-minute supply runs.

Some customers were going about their regular grocery shopping, while others were stocking up on essentials.

Randy, a local resident, noticed some shoppers looking panicked and anxious but felt his trip was just a typical grocery run.

“For the most part, I think a lot of people are taking advantage of the last day of the ad and probably picking up a few extras like I did,” Randy said.

Jerry Spencer, however, was preparing for whatever tropical storm Debby brings our way.

“Today I just had to get some last-minute items—backup toilet paper, things I’m going to grill in case the power goes out. I’ve got the gas grill ready outside. But I think I’m pretty much set. I don’t think this one is going to be that bad,” Spencer explained.

At the nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement store, the scene was similar.

Some customers were buying supplies for ongoing home projects, while others were looking for plywood and sandbags to guard against the anticipated rain.

“We are going to get a lot of rain and we are trying to keep the water from coming into the building,”

Willie Sloane, who has already prepared his house for the storm, is now focusing on helping his community.

“I’ve secured my house and now I’m working on the Town Creek Vision Building.”

Regardless of what Debby brings to the Cape Fear area, remember to check on your neighbors and stay prepared.
