Heavy rain leaves homes flooded

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Heavy rain left several houses on Jamaica Drive flooded on Christmas Eve.

Homeowner Billie Phillips says she went shopping with her son on Christmas Eve and then came home to this.

“It’s underwater,” Phillips said.

She says it’s not the first time.

“It gets like this when we have heavy storms and hurricanes,” Phillips said.

Phillips says it’s not just her house.

“There are just certain houses,” Phillips said. “There are about three to four houses that flood, because it’s lower on this end of the street.”

Phillips says there is not much that can be done about it. So, she stays positive.

While her plans to be in the house for Christmas Eve may be difficult, she has found a way around it.

“I’m going to wade in, barefooted, with my shoes in my hand,” Phillips said.

Phillips says she’ll be spending Christmas day at her step daughter’s house.

“They’re on drier ground,” Phillips said.

First, she has to get in her house. So, with her shoes in her hand, she went on through and laughed one last time before settling in for her rainy Christmas Eve.
