Hermine washes out 139-year-old rain record
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tropical Storm Hermine may not have been the worst storm the Wilmington area has ever seen, but it was one for the record books.
As of 10:45 p.m., the National Weather Service said the storm had dumped 7.54 inches of rain at the official recording station at Wilmington International Airport since midnight. That smashes the record for September 2 of 1.83 inches set in 1877.
Other parts of the area reported even more rain. The weather station on the roof of WWAY in downtown Wilmington had recorded 8.24 inches for the day just before 11 p.m.
