High driver who caused crash sentenced

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The driver who crashed his car into three parked cars and a business while high in February could spend up to four years in prison.

New Hanover County Superior Court Judge Phyllis Gorham sentenced Anthony Joye to 34 to 48 months followed by 36 months supervised probation after the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to aggravated felony serious injury by vehicle and possession of heroin Thursday.

On Feb. 15, Joye was driving on Market Street toward downtown Wilmington at about 80 miles per hour while high on drugs. Joye then lost control of the car at 2nd and Market Streets, slamming into three parked cars, a parking meter and the Shuckin’ Shack.

Joye had three passengers in his car. One of them, Juan Robinson, sustained serious injuries that required surgery. During the investigation, law enforcement officers said they discovered seven bindles of heroin.

Joye has been in custody since the incident.
