High school students help at Special Olympics field day

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Christian Academy students welcomed special friends from New Hanover County to have a fun field day at the school.

High school students were there to help all 370 Special Olympics athletes as they participated in several different farm theme events.

Some of the stations included lasso the steer, needle in the haystack, horse shoes, a petting zoo, and a hay ride.

“As a high school we go off campus and have a big field day, take a day out of classes just to relax and have some fun, and have some family time,” said High School Activities Coordinator Tonya Upton. “But we thought why not change it because we are blessed and we are given so much, and let’s give back.”

Upton says this is just a fun day full of games and the weather could not have been better for it.

She says she received a lot of positive feedback and hopes to try to have it again next year.
