Historic Azalea Queen’s Coronation kicks off festival

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the first time ever, the very first Azalea Queen got to crown this year’s queen, Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan.

Hagan, along with the Azalea Belles, Azalea Princess and other celebrities cruised into the Queen’s Coronation on the Henrietta. The boat was docked just outside the Wilmington Convention Center.

Hagan was crowned by Jacqueline Anderson, the first woman to wear the crown 68 years ago. Hagan said this crown is different than any others.

“This one is certainly very beautiful and it’s very different from any of the crowns I’ve ever worn,” Hagan said. “Because I’ve only participated in the Miss America organization, so I love that it goes all the way around your head and it fits pretty snug. It’s really beautiful, and it’s very old which is also very cool.”

Azalea Belles like New Hanover High School Senior Claire Blossom only get one chance to help host the festival. She says it’s a way to experience her favorite parts of the festival in a different way.

“It’s something I’ve grown up going to my whole life, so I’m excited to be a part of it this year,” Blossom said.

Blossom is one of 150 Belles who you’ll see in the iconic dresses.

“It’s very difficult,” Blossom said. “You have to pick up the front and maneuver you’re way around”

An old tradition meets the new queen.
