Historic Wilmington Foundation celebrates 50 years

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Historic Wilmington Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary with events around the Cape Fear.

Tonight Stephanie Meeks, the CEO and President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, spoke at a public presentation at the Coastline Convention Center.

Meeks talked about the history of the preservation movement and its importance for American communities.

“It’s great to come, always, to a city like Wilmington that really gets it, where preservation is part of the warmth and wealth of the community,” Meeks said.

This year is also the 50th anniversary of the passing of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Meeks said the National Register is a part of the 1966 Act, which has over 90,000 historic places all over the country, including locations in every county in the United States.
