Humpday Health: Dress for successful workouts

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You might not think much about what you wear while you work up a sweat, but your wardrobe can impact your workout.

“I think if you’re confident, you feel good in what you’re wearing, you feel like you look good then I think you’ll be more willing to push yourself a little bit more maybe stay in the gym a little longer,” said Lauren Hancock the owner and operator of THRIVE Activewear.

For a lot of us, working out means breaking out the old sweatpants and cotton t-shirts, but those go-to items might not be what’s best.

“You’ll want something that dries quickly, maybe some compression if you’re sore in the muscles or you need something to hold you in, and certainly something that will last you, that holds up in the wash,” said Hancock.

So why not wear cotton when you work out?

“When you go from wearing cotton to work out in and then you try a higher quality material, a more synthetic fabric, it’s hard to go back. You get that breath-ability and the moisture wicking and when cotton gets wet it’s going to stay wet for the duration of your workout,” Hancock said.

And of course no outfit is complete without a new pair of shoes.

“When you’re looking at a running shoe it kinda depends on the person,” said Michelle Fogle the operating partner at Fleet Feet.

How far you’re running, what terrain you’re running on, foot shape and body shape are all important when picking the right shoe for you.

“Ideally, if you can, you’d have two shoes in your lineup,” said Fogle.

That way both pairs will last longer. Proper care can add to a shoes lifetime as well.

“Not keeping your shoes in the car on super hot days or super cold days, that just breaks the cushion down faster,” said Fogle.

Just remember confidence is the first step to getting a great workout.
