Humpday Health: Kimberly Lawrance is one of the world’s strongest women

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Who knew one of the strongest women in the world lives right here in the Port City. Kimberly Lawrance won the 2016 Amateur Arnold Middle Weight Championship. Shortly after she received her pro card and then went on to place in the Strongest Woman in the World competition.

“My journey probably started a little different than others. I had every intention of going to the Crossfit Games,” Lawrence said.

But that was not in the cards and Lawrance did not make the team, however not making the games was not a deterrent.

“And there was a Strongman Competition and everyone kept telling me to go and try Strongman because that’s what I’m built for,” said Lawrance.

At first, she was not sold on the idea of a Strongman or  Strongwoman Competition.

“And then I had my first show and I won and I actually really liked it. The competitors were really nice,” Lawrance said.

She said one of her favorite parts if that there isn’t a lot of cardio involved in her training.

“I don’t like running miles in any sort of aspect,” said Lawrence.

So what exactly is a Strongman Competition?

“Most people consider the Strongman that we do picking up the huge boulder or atlas stones and the weird apparatus such as log clean or like a big old wooden log that actually has handles in it,” Lawrence said.

And though it may look super human or even impossible, Lawrance said it’s not.

“Most people honestly can do the weights,” Lawrence said.

She said the weights can vary from 60 pounds to several hundred pounds as an example.

“It’s the same thing as picking up a suitcase and carrying it through the airport,” Lawrence said.

Although lifting such heavy objects does come with some risk. Lawrence said it is totally worth it to compete in the sport.
