Humpday Health: New Year’s Resolutions
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Year’s Resolutions always sound like such a good idea on January 1, but they are hard to keep throughout the rest of the year.
“When it comes to New year’s Resolutions, the first thing is to not be negative about it,” said personal trainer Drew Dalton.
Now we’re a few weeks into 2016, which means we’re a few weeks into those resolutions.
“My New Year’s Resolution is to improve on last year. I don’t have any radical goals. But as they always say, slow and steady wins the race,” said John B. Clark of his goals for 2016.
But sticking to those goals can be hard.
“I’m used to calling a pizza in and it would be there in 20 minutes and didn’t have to worry about it. Also it’s hard getting into it after Christmas and New Year’s,” said Abbey Fogt about her resolution to plan her meals.
It can be difficult to make big changes.
“To me failure is just a way of learning,” said Dalton. He said not to get discouraged when times get tough.
“Think of it in the aspect of, ok I’m going to do one thing at a time and make it a habit,” said Dalton.
To form a habit, it typically takes about 20-25 days, but you’ve got to start somewhere. Fitness experts say smaller realistic goals are more likely to succeed in the long run.
“Maybe taking just half versus taking the entire class. I wouldn’t recommend coming in here for 2-3 hours a day. You’re just going to overwork your body, you’re going to get sore,” said Dreama Tapia, a customer service representative for Gold’s Gym.
Diet is just as important as working out.
“For me that’s going to be the hardest part, is the nutrition. You can’t do one without the other, basically you’re wasting your time working out if you don’t eat right, no doubt about that,” said Tapia.
But you are allowed to make mistakes.
“I’m not going to do a groundbreaking, record breaking workout every single time I train,” said Dalton.
Each week we’ll be bringing you health and fitness tips to incorporate into your normal life because small changes can add up to make a big difference.
