Humpday Health: Posture tips while computing or texting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “There’s ideal and there’s normal blood pressure, there’s ideal and there’s normal cholesterol levels. Well, someone figured out that there’s an ideal spine so we have to have something to work towards,” said Dr. Kevin Johnson of Graybar Chiropractic in Wilmington.

When it comes to a modern workplace, computers and smartphones are important tools to get stuff done, but if you’re not careful, you can develop back problems from using these devices.

It’s all about the proper posture, and Dr. Johnson has some tips to help.

“You want the screen to be level with your eyes, the keyboard to be 90 degree angle with the arms, and not only is that important, but your knees can be at a 90 degree angle as well, so it takes a lot of stress and strain off the low back while you’re on your computer all day,” said Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson says that perfect posture may be difficult to achieve when texting or surfing the web on the go, but a couple changes in how you use your phone could make all the difference.

“If you could, dictate, if you’re available to do that, that’s what I do oftentimes. But if you’re texting, not all day everyday. If you’re on your phone at the airport or wherever you’re on your phone, try to hold it up a little bit more, more eye-level. I would recommend that being the best recommendation for that type of thing,” said Dr. Johnson.

So if you want to avoid a trip to the chiropractor, follow these tips while you’re at work, and keep your back strong.
