Humpday Health: Travel workout tips

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many of us will be on the road for the next few weeks, traveling for the holidays. But that doesn’t mean you need to take a break from your workouts.

“You can’t out run your fork,” said Matt Skelly owner of Matt Skelly Training.

The holiday season is officially upon us.

“And we are very much tempted during the holiday season because there’s so many treats, sweets around us and it’s hard to get a handle on our eating. So it’s important at least to get some exercise in,” said Skelly.

Though you may be away from home, that’s not an excuse to slack off on your workouts.

“Your body is a machine in itself. So there’s a lot of body weight exercises you can do to maintain while you’re not in your typical gym setting,” Skelly said.

He said things like squats work your whole body and you can do them practically anywhere.

“Your core has to be engaged. Your legs are definitely being involved and you’ll get probably the best bang for you for your buck doing full body movements like that,” said Skelly.

Things like pull-ups, ab work, and even a simple morning jog can keep you active even on vacation.

“You just gotta be creative with your fitness when you’re on the road and always look for opportunities,” said Skelly. “There’s also an easy tool that you can take with you and it hooks onto a door. It’s called a TRX.”

Skelly said keeping a vision of your goals alive this time of year is important.

“You can’t outrun your fork. So what we try to tell our clients is definitely when they’re developing their vision, what do you want to feel like? What do you want to be like? So more importantly not just exercising, it’s about what you eat,” said Skelly.

He said keeping your workouts up while you’re away can even help motivate you to eat better.
