Hundreds gather to talk Wells Fargo Championship impacts

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The PGA Tour is coming to town for the first time in decades. The idea alone brought hundreds to Ogden Elementary School tonight to talk about the impact of the Wells Fargo Championship.

“Being proactive is so important and it was so important for Wells Fargo, the city and the county to be here to answer questions,” said Bette Bauereis.

The championship is just six months away and tonight folks met to talk about what the tournament really means for Wilmington.

“I think our biggest concern was how are they going to route traffic,” Bauereis said. “But the fact that people are going to have to park out at the Spot Festival parking lot and be bussed in, that makes much more sense than having individual cars coming in.”

Comments and questions raised by residents will be considered in the final decision making process over the next several months.

“It feels like at this point, and certainly on paper, it’s very well planned out and very coordinated. And with the collaboration of three counties working at it and a lot of security personnel as well,” said New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple.

Zapple also added this tournament is an opportunity for Wilmington to be on an international stage and show what we have to offer and encourage people and businesses to call the Port City home in the future.
