Hundreds of dogs compete in Wilmington over the weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Working dogs, sporting dogs, hound dogs, toy dogs and many more competed this weekend in the Hanover Kennel Club dog show.

About 400 dogs of over 109 breeds entered in to compete for best of show starting by competing among breeds, then in groups and, finally, scaling down to just one final winner.

Show Chairman John Boozer, who first showed his dog in 1967, says all dogs have a purpose whether they are big or small. After 26 years of chairing the show, he was happy to still get a large turnout, despite the hurricane.

“The problem with the show is that you have to enter several weeks ahead of time and right at the time you had to enter was right before the hurricane hit,” said Boozer. “So, some people I guess were skeptical about being able to come but we’ve had a great facility here. We’ve been using it for almost 25 years.”

Boozer was grateful that there was plenty of sunshine and dry time for the show to run smoothly.
