‘India Day’ in Wilmington celebrates identity, tradition, and culture

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday the Cape Fear Cultural Association of India held ‘India Day’ at the Harrelson Center in downtown Wilmington.

The cultural celebration brought people together through Indian music, food, performances and more. There were numerous tables set up allowing the community to explore the states in India and learn about their individual cultures.

Lead organizer for this year’s ‘India Day’ Dr. Sejel Patel says it is important to keep the youth involved in the event to pass along the tradition.

“Making sure that our children, our youths know who they are. Are comfortable with their identity, which is so important in this age. They are taking ownership by actually running some of kids activities,” Dr. Patel said.

Dr. Patel added that she was pleasantly surprised by the turnout.

With a large turnout this year, they are hoping to make this an annual event in the future. The first one was held in 2023.
