Is GenX affecting tourism?

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — GenX is an unknown that is causing a lot of concern for many in New Hanover and Brunswick County, but is it causing concern for tourist?

“Just for the day we packed water bottles anyway from home and, so I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about it, but if I were bringing the kids down here and we were staying a long time, I would definitely bring water,” tourist Pamela Hoile said during her visit to New Hanover County.

Visitors like Hoile said they are not drinking the water, but she doesn’t think it will spark a concern for tourism this summer.

“Majority of people aren’t going to think twice about it unless they know someone that has been afflicted with something that can be directly attributed to it,” she said. “People I just don’t think are that reactionary.”

Other residents and beach visitors are still inviting others down to soak up the sun with them.

“It’s not going to deter any of my friends or family from coming here to visit,” Wilmington resident Deborah Barton said.

Even employees of beach shops like Wings Beachwear are not worried about their business being effected by GenX.

“I think we’re going to be about the same. I’m sure some of the people have heard about it, but I’m sure they’re not concerned because they don’t live here,” Wings Beachwear employee Tabitha Gray said.

But visitors do hope the situation gets answers soon.

“I don’t think tourism should be where they’re worried. They should be worried about the people that live here. They need to fix it. They need to take care of it,” Hoile said.
