(WWAY) — Nearly 2,600 polling locations are open across the state for the primary election, but many people will not be waiting in line today.

The State Board of Elections says there were 670,000 in-person early votes over the last few weeks, as well as 19,000 mail-in votes.

In the Cape Fear, more than 16,000 people participated in early voting in New Hanover County. More than 15,000 in Brunswick and more than 2,200 in Columbus. We reached out  to Pender and Bladen Counties but have not heard back.

Polls are open until to 7:30 Tuesday night.

Results will come out slower than during previous elections. Changes to state law means early voting ballots will not be counted ahead of time.

And remember, voters have to bring photo ID to the polls. If a voter does not have an ID, they will be asked to fill out a provisional ballot stating why they were unable to produce photo identification.
