Jeff Gainey steps down as Topsail basketball coach

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Topsail boys basketball coach Jeff Gainey has stepped down as head coach of the Pirates. The job opening for his replacement has already been posted on the Pender County Schools website. Gainey took over the Topsail basketball program in 2009. He coached at Topsail for six seasons.

Gainey and the Pirates won 18 games in the 2011-12 season, but Topsail clearly struggled when they made the transition to the 3-A level from the 2-A level, and more in particular the transition to the 3-A 4-A Mideastern Conference. Topsail only won two league games the last two seasons in the Mideastern Conference.
