Judge scolds suspect accused in crash that killed toddler, newborn

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The driver accused in the crash that killed a toddler and later his newborn brother faced a judge today.

Matthew Deans, 28, is charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, among other charges, in connection with the incident that happened on Highway 17 in Hampstead. Dobbs Eddings, 2, died in the crash. His mother, Hadley, had an emergency c-section following the crash. That baby, Reed, died two days after the crash.

When Deans arrived for the court hearing this morning, he was wearing khaki shorts and a short-sleeved collared shirt.

“Why are you going to show up to court dressed like that based on these charges?” the judge asked him.

Deans then looked at his clothing and responded to the judge quietly. After the exchange, the judge continued the case.
