Kevin Mintz adds another local face to UNCW Baseball
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the UNCW Baseball team prepares for their opening conference series this weekend, the guys hit the field for an afternoon practice ahead of the storm. This includes a familiar face to high school baseball fans in the Cape Fear.
On the UNCW roster, everyone recognizes the names like Mason Berne and Clark Cota as local high school stars to make it on the Seahawks. But there is another name on the list this season.
Freshman Kevin Mintz comes to UNCW from Ashley High School where he watched the Seahawks win CAA Titles and make the national tournament.
At this point in his career, Mintz takes mostly mental reps as his counterparts like Alex Royalty have UNCW catching national attention.
Until his number is called, he helps out any way he can. But he knows he and the freshman players will make an impact when that day comes.
“There definitely a lot of good freshman talent,” Mintz said. “We all work really hard. No matter who you put up there, we’ll give it our all.”
“Kevin is going to be a very good college pitcher down the road,” UNCW Baseball Head Coach Mark Scalf said. “Kevin, a long with some of our other young arms, may not be quite ready yet. The good thing is, this year, knock on wood, as long as we stay healthy they won’t have to.”
Mintz and the Seahawks will play Hofstra to open CAA play Friday with a 6 p.m start time.
