Kids in the Cape Fear take part in ‘The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson’
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thursday kids from around the globe, including right here in New Hanover County, participated in “The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson.”
The purpose is to help teach kids and families about the importance of the knowing how to swim as drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages one to four in the U.S.
The YMCA held lessons at Robert Strange Pool, YWCA, Sampson County YMCA, and Legion Stadium Pool where kids had one-on-one lessons with instructors.
Emily Jones brought her daughter for lessons since they have a pool at home, and she’s still getting comfortable with swimming.
“I think I’ll feel a little bit better about it, and I think she’s going to feel a little bit more able to move around in the water and feel safe herself too,” Jones said.
Volunteer instructors Sarah Phillips and Colby Stone both swim for Waves of Wilmington swim team and they say knowing how to swim can save your life.
“If anyone gets into a dangerous situation and obviously there’s lifeguards but having that first instinct to be able to know what to do in the water and being familiar with it is super important for all ages,” Stone shared.
The YMCA offers swimming lessons year-round for children and adults.
