Kids set sail on the fishing trip of a lifetime

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Sea fishing is something many people in the Cape Fear take for granted, but for 19 kids and their families it’s the trip of a lifetime.

Most days fishing is the last thing on their mind, but Friday was a little different.

The kids all have one thing in common: they’re living with life threatening illnesses or disabilities.

The United Special Sportsman Alliance helped the families forget their worries by providing the free trip.

The adventure kicked off on Thursday, when families checked into a local hotel. Friday started early. Breakfast was served at 6:30 am and the boats took off from the Southport Marina at 9 a.m.

By 1 p.m. the kids were back on land and joyed a lunch provided by the community.

Their captains donated both their time and boat to give the families a memory to last a lifetime.
