Labor Department Flags 31 hazards at Fire Station 13

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — The State Department of Labor finished their investigation into hazards at fire Station 13 in Castle Hayne.

The department identified 17 safety hazards, mostly focused on equipment or electrical safety. For example, a step ladder was found without the maximum load being marked on it. There was also a drill press without proper machine guarding in place and not securely anchored.

There were 14 health hazards mainly centered around communication about New Hanover County health programs. For example, for the bloodborne pathogens program, the jobs within fire services that are covered by the program must be identified. They must also ensure that they are aware of the program and what is required of them when exposed to these pathogens.

A note from New Hanover county’s Assistant County manager says OSHA does not have enforceable standards for mold or water quality, but it appears the mold issue has been successfully mitigated and with the water system treated, the water was deemed safe to consume.
