WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – In the opening round of the NCHSAA girls soccer playoffs, Topsail picked up a road win Wednesday over MEC rival Laney 1-0.

The game was originally scheduled for Monday, but got delayed multiple times due to weather.

Scoreless in the second half, a Bucs clearing attempt went off a Topsail player’s face. It deflected right to Ryan Lambert, who’s strike from outside the box managed to find the back of the net.

The Pirates will next face Hoggard on the road on Thursday. Per NCHSAA rules, the game can’t be delayed to give Topsail time to rest. Only inclement weather can do so.
