Laney and New Hanover hold signing days
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s a big day today for student athletes at New Hanover and Laney as more than 20 athletes signed their National Letters of Intent.
For student athletes getting ready to graduate high school, signing day is a crowning achievement.
“I’m finally achieving my dream. I’m finally able to play baseball at the college D-1 level,” Caleb Bishop, New Hanover Baseball, said. “It’s just everything I could ask for.”
The opportunity to play college athletics is not one that can be taken for granted. In order to make it to that stage and live that dream, it comes with hard work.
“I started wrestling my freshman year and I didn’t expect it,” Kevin Saravia, Laney Wrestling, said. “I put in the hard work and got to where I got.”
New Hanover High School had 9 Wildcats sign their National Letter of Intent and Laney had 13.
The athletes from both schools will be travelling all across the country, but the Smithwick twins will be staying right here in Wilmington.
“This year has been really great to have this opportunity and I’m blessed to run for Wilmington.” Haley Smithwick, Laney Track and Field, said.
Becoming a college athlete is a large accomplishment and it could be a little scary for some.
But these sisters are in this game together.
“I feel a little bit nervous to see the transition, but also I’ll have Haley with me so I don’t think it will be as bad. I’m excited for both of us because we both worked very hard and we both deserve this opportunity.”
