HAMPSTEAD, N.C. (WWAY) – It was a long time coming for Buccaneer baseball as Laney’s 11-2 road win over Topsail on Thursday gave them their first Mideastern Conference title since 2009.

Down 2-1 in the 3rd, J.B. Brooks blasted a three-run homer over the center field wall. Owen Gore followed that up with a 2 RBI hit aided by a throwing error to third base. Mason Jones then grounded into right field to send Gore home to cap off a six-run frame.

After finishing 7th in the standings each of the last two years, the Bucs are now the kings of the MEC.

“We just put the work in at practice every day and really worked hard,” Brooks said. “We just got the job done when we needed to in the game. I got into a good hitters count and I just barreled the ball up and got the team going to get a big lead in the 3rd inning.”

Had Laney lost, they would have shared the title with Ashley. Then they would host the Eagles on Friday for a game to determine playoff seeding. The win avoids that from needing to happen.
