Law enforcement warns drivers, boaters before holiday weekend

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — As you begin to prepare for Memorial Day weekend, multiple law enforcement agencies are warning you to be safe.

“On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive” is an annual campaign by local and state law enforcement agencies. This is the 6th year of the campaign.

Captain Todd Radabaugh with the Wildlife Resources Commission said, this weekend, officers will be conducting sobriety checkpoints and promoting public awareness to prevent people from driving or boating while impaired. Radabaugh  said everyone has a choice to make the right decision.

“If someone is involved in a crash while they are operating a boat or a car while they are under the influence, it is not an accident, that is a very poor decision that often has tragic consequences,” Radabaugh said.

Radabaugh said they will have checkpoints using the Forensics Tests mobile unit. He said they will also have check points at several boating locations throughout the weekend.
