Leland Council reviews ongoing Magnolia Greens explosion investigation

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — At the Leland Town Council agenda review meeting Monday afternoon, the council continued to raise questions regarding the explosion in the Magnolia Greens neighborhood.

It happened on May 16 and damaged several homes on Suncrest Way.

The public safety director informed the council that the insurance company collected samples and evidence to send back to the lab for analysis. They are still waiting for the results and don’t expect to have them for several weeks.

The public safety director said it was probably the result of a vapor explosion, and they aren’t certain, but they suspect the source was in the trunk of a vehicle.

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Campbell raised a few questions to have a better understanding of where the investigation stands now.

He says he is satisfied with the answers he got on Monday as he understands the investigation is ongoing.

“It’s still under consideration, being looked at by the state and many other agencies including insurance companies. As soon as the staff knows what or has any better idea of what happened, we’ll know and we will let everybody else know,” Campbell said.

Campbell encourages the community to remain patient as they are working to get answers.

He adds, “the more confidence we have in the answers that we give to what really happened, better off everybody will be. Then, their life can settle back to where they need to be.”

Campbell asked the staff to continue to release information to the residents, HOA, and public to keep everyone as informed as council is.
