Leland leaders to vote on Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Tomorrow town leaders in Leland will meet to discus a finalized plan to create a Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan for the town.
“I think it’s a great idea. I’d like to see more trails on the roads themselves,” said resident Mike Duffy.
A matching grant from the NCDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative was awarded to Leland last year to develop a comprehensive plan for the town. Some people said that is exactly what the town needs.
“If you ride throughout Leland you find there’s no shoulders. There’s no bike lanes and there’s no shoulders for bikers or walkers. I’m a walker also,” said Duffy.
The plan hopes to improve safety, which is important to residents.
“I moved here from California where there’s an awareness that bikers will be on the road or that walkers will be on the road which you don’t find here. This is the only community in all those years where I’ve been driven off the road,” Duffy said.
It is also looking to stimulate economic development by providing safe and convenient access throughout Leland.
“You’d be surprised, when I go out road biking there are a lot of people who walk in this community who don’t have any other means but to walk,” said Duffy.
Plus with more walking and biking opportunities there are more options to encourage a healthy lifestyle for the town.
