Lightning ignites fire that destroys neighborhood clubhouse

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters say weather is likely to blame for a fire that destroyed a Brunswick County neighborhood’s clubhouse Thursday.

Leland Fire Chief John Grimes said the Jackey’s Creek Clubhouse is a total loss after a lightning strike apparently started the fire. He said it happened during the line of strong and severe thunderstorms that moved through southeastern North Carolina Thursday afternoon.

Grimes said four fire departments responded to the fire. He added that no one was hurt.
