Local expert says to stay away from alligators

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As the investigation continues in Florida after a 2-year-old was killed by an alligator Tuesday, we spoke to a local expert about precautions we can take in our area.

Jimmy English, a local Damage Control Agent with the Wildlife Resource Commission, said alligators in public places are not wild animals. They are urbanized and they are dangerous.

“Just take no chances with them,” English said. “Don’t try to feed them. Don’t try to get close to them. Don’t take your eye off of them.”

English added that folks shouldn’t take chances with any type of wildlife, not just alligators.

If you have an issue with an alligator, contact the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission.
