Local shelter sees surge in animals, avoids euthanasia
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County Animal Shelter reported this week that it had no open kennels after taking in more than 130 animals, nearly exceeding its capacity.
According to the shelter’s social media post, the facility brought in 132 animals — 40 dogs and 80 cats — despite being built to house only 100.
Shelter Manager Jewell Horton said the recent increase in surrenders was not likely related to Fourth of July fireworks.
“We’re seeing more and more owners who can’t financially provide for their animals,” Horton said.
Despite reaching capacity, the shelter avoided euthanizing any animals. Horton said 66 pets were able to leave the facility through adoptions or transfers.
She said that while this provided some relief, it may not last long.
“And the word was it’s a revolving door, and we are like yeah it is a revolving door,” Horton said. “You opened up a space for that animal right there to walk in and not put somebody at risk, and it gave us breathing room, but we don’t know for how long because that is the nature of the beast right now.”
The shelter currently has more animals waiting to be spayed and neutered. They will become available for adoption during normal business hours and during the shelter’s reduced Friday and Saturday hours.
Horton also encouraged the public to consider the shelter’s sponsorship program. The program allows people to pay the adoption fee for an animal, even if they are not ready to adopt one themselves.
