Lowest Labor Day gas prices in 11 years
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As you’re filling up your cars and heading out the roads this holiday weekend, you won’t be dishing out as much money this year compared to recent years at the pump.
According to AAA Carolinas, the average gas price in North Carolina is now $2.22 per gallon. This time last year it was over a dollar more.
Officials say about 1 million Tar Heel state residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home, 86% of those will be driving.
Carson Pigett, Wilmington resident, says he’s always driving, especially for work. He said he’s glad for the drop in prices.
“We are everywhere from Jacksonville to Oak Island all kinds of places,” said Pigett.
Those traveling this year will be paying the lowest gas prices this holiday in 11 years.
Wilmington resident Tommy Tackett says, “It’s allowed me and my family drive around and do more stuff. We don’t have to worry about breaking an arm and leg when filling up especially in this thing.”
Since July 4th, gas prices has fallen 43 cents a gallon allowing people to spend more money elsewhere.
If you’re heading west, like to Asheville, expect to pay a little more with prices at $2.36 a gallon while those traveling to Greensboro will find the cheapest price for gas in the state at about 2 dollars.
Tackett says he has family traveling to the Port City for the weekend.
“They are driving down from Buffalo so gas prices definitely help with a 1,400 miles round trip,” said Tackett.
AAA Carolinas says it expects the highest number of travelers in seven years for this holiday weekend.
