San Diego makes Whiteville’s MacKenzie Gore 3rd pick in MLB Draft

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) – With the third overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft the San Diego Padres selected former Whiteville High School standout MacKenzie Gore.

Gore graduated high school just a few days ago and now is on his way to the Major Leagues.

He joins Tommy Greene and Patrick Lennon as one of three Whiteville players selected in the first round. Trot Nixon from New Hanover and Tyrell Godwin of East Bladen are the only other area players to be drafted in the first round.

Gore finished his career with a state record 0.35 ERA. He only lost two games in his 43-game career.

Gore has until July 7 to choose whether to sign and accept his more than $6 million signing bonus for being the third overall pick or attend East Carolina.
