Man arrested in shooting of off-duty NC officer
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A Mississippi man has been arrested in the shooting of an off-duty police officer in North Carolina.
State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Patty McQuillan tells The Fayetteville Observer that 63-year-old Joseph Edwards was served with an arrest warrant in hospital Wednesday. He’s accused of shooting a Fayetteville officer at the officer’s home Monday and trying to ram responding troopers and deputies.
Edwards was injured when his truck crashed after officers shot inside.
The SBI hasn’t released the officer’s name, at the request of Fayetteville police. A Fayetteville police spokesman says he’s expected to recover.
Authorities say Edwards was using a pickup to tow a Federal Emergency Management Agency temporary housing trailer at the time. FEMA spokesman Mike Wade says the agency is investigating and working with law enforcement.
